FROM THE FOSTER HOME
Barney came into SDR’s care at just 3-4 weeks old, along with his siblings. He thrived in foster care and was soon ready for adoption—until he was diagnosed with bilateral hip dysplasia. His medical journey began with surgery in October to remove his right femoral head, followed by months of daily physiotherapy and weekly rehab. His recovery was so successful that his surgeon decided a second surgery wasn’t needed. Now, Barney is finally ready to find his forever home!
This handsome, goofy boy is a great match for many types of homes. He loves people and enjoys being the center of attention—whether it's making friends at the park or charming passersby on walks. Barney would do well in a family environment, though older children are recommended, as he is protective of his hips after years of discomfort.
An outdoor enthusiast, Barney’s favorite pastime is chewing sticks, but he’s just as happy playing fetch or destroying toys. As an avid chewer, he needs durable chew toys to keep him busy. He’s in his "teenage" phase, so continued training is important, but he’s food-motivated and eager to learn. Barney is fully crate-trained, sleeping through the night in his crate and staying kenneled while his foster mom is at work. He does well on a leash but could use some continued work on loose-leash walking now that he has more energy.
Barney has been raised with two medium-sized dogs and three cats. He plays well with dogs but may be cautious at first, needing a slow introduction to new canine friends. With cats, he does well but might need supervision, as his enthusiasm can be a little overwhelming.
Barney is finally ready to enjoy life to the fullest. Could you be the one to give him his happy tail?
Medical Note: Barney has bilateral hip dysplasia. He had an FHO surgery Oct.17 2024 to correct one side. As of February 5, 2025, an FHO on the other side is not needed. However, he may require this surgery in the future. It is recommended that he be re-checked at around 1.5 years old. If an FHO is needed within the next two years, SDR will cover 50% of the estimated cost of surgery.
