The Importance of Spaying and Neutering: What Every Adopter Needs to Know

At Saskatoon Dog Rescue, we believe that every dog deserves a happy, healthy life. One of the most impactful ways adopters can support this mission is by ensuring their dog is spayed or neutered. It’s not just a requirement outlined in our adoption contract—it’s a commitment to your pup’s well-being and the broader dog community.

Why Spaying and Neutering Matters

Spaying and neutering isn’t just about preventing unwanted litters (though that’s a huge part of it). The procedure also offers significant health benefits for your dog:

  1. Reduced Risk of Certain Cancers: Spaying and neutering can lower the chances of your dog developing reproductive-related cancers.

  2. Improved Behavior: Fixed dogs are often calmer and less prone to certain behavioral issues, like roaming or marking.

  3. Longer, Healthier Lives: Studies show that spayed and neutered dogs often live longer, healthier lives.

When you adopt from us, all adult dogs and puppies over six months are already spayed or neutered. Puppies under six months go home unaltered, but it’s crucial that adopters follow through with the procedure once they reach the appropriate age (more on that in the next section).

Your Role as an Adopter

If you’ve adopted a puppy under six months of age, it’s your responsibility to have them spayed or neutered within 60 days of them turning eight months old. This timeline is clearly outlined in your adoption contract.

How to Redeem Your $200 Spay/Neuter Deposit

We understand that the spay/neuter procedure can be costly, which is why we include a refundable $200 deposit in the adoption fee for puppies not yet fixed. Here’s how to get that deposit back:

  1. Schedule the Surgery: Book the spay/neuter appointment with your vet before the deadline outlined in your contract.

  2. Get Proof of Surgery: After the procedure, ask your vet for a "Proof of Surgery" certificate.

  3. Submit for Refund: Complete the Spay/Neuter Deposit Form on our website here.

  4. Receive Your Refund: Once we review your submission, we’ll refund the $200 deposit via e-transfer within 30 days.

Want to Pay It Forward?

You also have the option to donate your $200 deposit back to Saskatoon Dog Rescue. This generous choice helps us continue rescuing and caring for more dogs in need. Simply select this option on your adoption contract at the time of signing.

Important Reminders

  1. Deadlines Matter: If we don’t receive proof of surgery within 60 days of your dog turning eight months old, the $200 deposit will be forfeited.

  2. Medical Exceptions: If your vet advises delaying the procedure for health reasons, please email written documentation to medical@saskatoondogrescue.com to avoid losing your deposit.

By following through with spaying or neutering your pup, you’re not only ensuring a healthier future for them but also helping us fight the overpopulation crisis.
